Africa, a continent endowed with immense natural and human resources as well as great cultural, ecological and economic diversity, remains underdeveloped. Most African nations suffer from military dictatorships, corruption, civil unrest and war, underdevelopment and deep poverty. The majority of the countries classified by the UN as least developed are in Africa. Numerous development strategies have failed to yield the expected results. Although some believe that the continent is doomed to perpetual poverty and economic slavery, Africa has immense potential. HIV/AIDS and extreme poverty are the two most important issues of our lifetime, and if we lose this perspective then they will only continue to become worse. We must not allow the dialogue for eliminating HIV/AIDS and extreme poverty to burn out like a neglected fire. We must engage in the dialogue and retain our global perspective. The current HIV/AIDS epidemic has inflicted the most devastating medical impact of the past 600 years, and the disease of poverty continues to present the greatest barrier to good health. Perhaps you’ve seen news reports about the humanitarian crisis in African countries. Maybe you saw a Red Cross ad on TV urgently asking for your help. However you’ve learned of the need, your help can’t wait in many African countries where some many organizations are working to save and improve lives. Please help, donate something. Impossible is nothing in Africa. Together, we can give the African people the tools they need to beat extreme poverty and the chance for a hopeful future. How are different countries in Africa affected? Both HIV prevalence rates and the numbers of people dying from AIDS vary greatly between African countries. In Somalia and Senegal the HIV prevalence is under 1% of the adult population, whereas in South Africa and Zambia around 15-20% of adults are infected with HIV. In four southern African countries, the national adult HIV prevalence rate has risen higher than was thought possible and now exceeds 20%. These countries are Botswana (24.1%), Lesotho (23.2%), Swaziland (33.4%) and Zimbabwe (20.1%). West Africa has been less affected by AIDS, but the HIV prevalence rates in some countries are creeping up. HIV prevalence is estimated to exceed 5% in Cameroon (5.4%), Côte d'Ivoire (7.1%) and Gabon (7.9%). Until recently the national HIV prevalence rate has remained relatively low in Nigeria, the most populous country in Sub-Saharan Africa. The rate has grown slowly from below 2% in 1993 to 3.9% in 2005. But some states in Nigeria are already experiencing HIV infection rates as high as those now found in Cameroon. Already around 2.9 million Nigerians are estimated to be living with HIV. Adult HIV prevalence in East Africa exceeds 6% in Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania. Save African Children Your help is critical because the children of Africa - now more than ever! --- are in need of health care, education, food, shelter and care and support. The AIDS pandemic is an unprecedented challenge - but with your support, they can meet all basic needs, also you can bring hope, opportunity and save their lives! Help with your donation to any humanitarian organization.

People with HIV still experience unacceptable discrimination when they seek to enter the United States. Help us send the message, once and for all, that people living with HIV should enjoy the same rights and freedoms as anyone else. Currently, people living with HIV are permanently excluded from the United States except in exceptional cases. Applying for the special waiver is a long and complicated process and people who need to travel for business have the option to either tell their employer about their HIV or lie to US immigration officials. An applicant who does not disclose their status is deemed to have committed immigration fraud and will be forcibly deported and prohibited from ever entering the US again. The US regulations were rushed into law, in the era before treatments were available, to prevent a young British child with HIV being taken by the Make A Wish Foundation to visit Disneyland before they died. US Immigration refused to grant the child a visa because of HIV. Health professionals have been turned away from conferences on HIV because of their status and, as a result of these restrictions, World AIDS Conferences and a number of other important scientific meetings are no longer held in the US. For more information on the ban and its effects visit http://tinyurl.com/yl9mxr Please join this group and invite your friends to help us get the word out. Then take action by: • If you live in the UK, emailing your MP to ask the UK Government to intervene through the Terrence Higgins Trust website at http://tinyurl.com/yl9mxr • If you live in the US, use http://www.rallycongress.com/am/954/ to send a message to your Congressional Representatives to end the ban once and for all. • Wherever you live, you can tell people about this campaign and ask them to lend their support. It could make all the difference. "The ban serves absolutely no scientific purpose. Our country has a long record of discrimination and this is just one more example. ... This is strictly about politics." - Patricia Mail, president of the American Public Health Association

AIDS / HIV research

No one should have to live with this disease. Support research for the cure. Every hour of every day, someone is diagnosed with juvenile (type 1) diabetes, the most severe form of a disease that annually accounts for almost $100 billion in health care costs in the U.S. alone. Usually striking before the age of 30, juvenile diabetes takes a harsh toll on people. Not only will they be insulin-dependent for life, but devastating life-limiting and life-shortening complications such as blindness, amputation, heart disease and stroke, and kidney failure are an ever-present threat. Insulin is not a cure for the disease—it is merely life support. Juvenile diabetes is destructive both to children and to childhood. Controlling the disease requires 24/7/365 vigilance and imposes a grueling regimen. It includes eating a carefully calculated diet, checking blood glucose levels several times each day (by lancing a finger) and insulin injections — as many as six per day — or delivery of insulin through a pump just to stay alive. It means children and families living by the clock, day and night, for the rest of their lives—lives that turn out to average about 15 years less than normal. You can't outgrow juvenile diabetes. As JDRF International Chairman Mary Tyler Moore has said, "Diabetes is an all too personal time bomb which can go off today, tomorrow, next year, or ten years from now—a time bomb affecting millions...one which must be defused." The only solution is a cure. That's why JDRF has a singular mission: to find a cure for diabetes and its complications through the support of research as soon as possible. (from jdrf.org)
